  • deborah is a visual artist based in regina, saskatchewan, canada on treaty 4 lands situated on the territories of the nêhiyawak, anihšināpēk, dakota, lakota, and nakoda, and the homeland of the métis/michif nation.
  • new to the medium of oil painting but not new to art, she has been drawing and creating with charcoal, graphite, pastel, ink, and watercolour for most of her life prior to fulfilling a lifelong dream of working with clay.
  • her path crossed with her daughter’s grade 8 art teacher, brenda blackburn, who first introduced her to clay and the wheel.
  • from there she was mentored by judy macnaughton, artist in residence, in estevan, saskatchewan.
  • judy encouraged and provided workshops with the likes of mel bolen, charlie ferraro, anne mclellan who ultimately shaped deborah’s style of pottery.
  • an avid proponent of the arts, deborah volunteered as fine art coordinator arranging the various classes that the arts council would provide to the city of estevan and ultimately began to teach pottery classes as she grew in her craft.
  • life was always changing around her and tragedy struck taking her far from the earth and the fire.
  • after raising children, and losing her husband to cancer she moved to western canada.
  • life again brought tragedy in the form of an auto collision while she was riding her bicycle.
  • after surgeries and many years of rehabilitation, she moved back to saskatchewan to rebuild her life again.
  • it was through a class at an art store that reconnected her with her drawing, creating roots and thus propelled her into oil painting and still life through the little blue house.
